Title of lesson:  Toys and Games of the Civil War

Lesson Summary: Students will learn how to utilize Internet sources to create time-period toys during the Civil War era, and compare toys from different time periods.

Grade Level Expectation: 

            Power Standard – Identify economical and social causes of the Civil War            especially pertaining to children. 

            Learning Target – Students will be able to observe changes and historical values over a period of time. 

            Learning Target – Students will be able to follow specific instruction on how to create Civil War toys. 

Key Terms:   Civil War, Confederates, Rebels, Federalist, Regions, Canisters, Construct

Historical Background – Time related information from the Civil War period. 

Anticipatory Set – Discuss and create a list of current popular toys.   

 

 

Do Now Activity 

  1. After comparing toys from different time periods, the students will read and follow specific instructions to create a toy from the Civil War era. There will be two choices of toys to create; a Civil War drum and/or a doll.  The materials could be provided, or brought in by the students.  
  2. After completion, the students will be able to share their creativity and discuss their favorite game from our Civil War study.

Homework –This lesson plan will be completed in the classroom. No homework will be 

involved, unless a students was absent. 

Assessment – The Assessment will be the students’ finished product.
