Time: 8:30 am—12:00 pm
Location: Southwest Center
Audience: All beginning teachers
Facilitator: Barbara Arnold
Member Fee: $30 per session, $100 for all
Non-Member Fee: $80 per session, $150 for all
Description: These sessions will offer school districts the
opportunity to send their new teachers to one, two, or all of the
sessions that address the most critical needs for teachers.
Districts have the option of selecting specific modules for
different teachers who have different needs and weaknesses. Part 1,
Procedures and Classroom Management: Research suggests that the
most challenging aspect of teaching for the new teacher is
classroom management. This module will provide the teacher with the
most effective research-based essentials from a variety of
resources for day one, week one, semester one and the entire first
year. Activities will model procedures, focus the teacher on
avoiding the most common mistakes, and provide strategies for
building an effective classroom climate that builds strong
student/teacher relationships.
Title: Pt. 2: Cooperative Learning
Date: 7/29/2009
Time: 12:45 pm—4:15 pm
Description: One of the most effective classroom strategies for
improving student achievement is the use of cooperative learning.
This module will model a variety of cooperative learning
strategies, essential elements necessary for effective cooperative
learning that can be applied in all content areas and at all grade
levels. Teachers will have the opportunity to participate in a
variety of activities that can be adapted to the participant’s
classroom. Teachers will leave this workshop able to recognize and
apply the elements of quality cooperative learning and several
strategies and lessons that are designed for the teacher’s
individual classroom/content.
Title: Pt. 3: Marzano “Effective Strategies”
Date: 7/30/2009
Time: 8:30 am—12:00 pm
Description: The extensive research of Robert Marzano identified
nine strategies that are most effective at improving student
achievement. This workshop will examine each strategy and provide
the participants with the opportunity to develop an example of each
strategy for their own classrooms.
Title: Pt. 4: Strategic Teaching
Date: 7/30/2009
Time: 12:45 pm—4:15 pm
Description: “Strategic Teaching” is a model with the tools for
teachers to select the right research-based strategy for each of
their lessons. Research and practice of teachers have created,
modified, and redefined hundreds of new techniques for the
classroom. This module will introduce the new teacher to the
framework for selecting the right strategy to meet high standards
and meet the needs of diverse learners.
Title: Pt. 5: Assessment for Learning and Grading
Date: 7/31/2009
Time: 8:30 am—12:00 pm
Description: Many teachers enter the classroom with no formal
training in assessing the achievement of their students, and
consequently they rely on “traditions” that often have little
relationship to actual student learning. The traditional point
system so often used for scoring lead to inaccurate conclusions
about a student’s achievement. This module will provide the teacher
with tools that will inform their instruction, assist students in
tracking their learning, and will provide an accurate portrayal of
the student’s progress.
Title: Pt. 6: What Every Teacher Needs to Know About the State
Assessment Program
Date: 7/31/2009
Time: 12:45 pm—4:15 pm
Description: Every teacher needs to know the “in’s” and “out’s” of
the state assessment program, the terminology, resources available
on the DESE website, tips and day to day ideas for preparing
students to succeed on the state assessment. This module will
provide teachers with the basics of the state assessment,
implications, and the basics of selected response, constructed
response, and performance events. Released items, scoring guides
and anchor papers will be used to illustrate the scoring
process.
