Design

Description: How will we know that students truly understand and
can apply knowledge in a meaningful way? How can we design our
courses and units to emphasize understanding and "uncoverage"
rather than "coverage"? Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins
and Jay McTighe explores these questions and provides practical
solutions for the teacher-designer. The workshop will include
analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to
coverage and activity-oriented plans. Though backward from habit,
this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction. By
thinking through the assessments up front, we ensure greater
alignment of goals; then teaching is focused on desired results.
Assessment practices must be connected to learning goals. If what
is assessed signals what is important to learn, then how it is
assessed signals how it should be learned! Repeated from 2008 with
more emphasis on assessment.
Title: Formative Assessment: Making a Difference
Topics: Curriculum; Instruction; Assessment
Date: 5/27/2009

their students are thinking! This workshop emphasizes how formative
assessment and instruction are intertwined with the purpose of
increasing student learning. Several classroom strategies will be
shared that can be used to determine where the student learning is
before, during, and after the lesson. Attending the 4 day series on

Title: Learning to Write Powerful Summative Assessments
Topics: Curriculum; Instruction; Assessment
Date: 5/28/2009
Time: 8:30 am--4:15 pm
Location: Southwest Center
Audience: All Educators
Facilitator: Anne Shadwick
Member Fee: $30
Non-Member Fee: $80
Description: Have you analyzed your MAP data and found students are
not performing at the level that you wish? Summative evaluations
are used to determine if students have mastered specific
competencies and to identify instructional areas that need
additional attention. The goal of summative assessments is to make
a judgment of student competency -- after an instructional phase is
complete. Summative performance tasks encourage students to think
creatively and allow them to show what they know and can do in an
authentic context. The tasks are exciting, engaging, and
challenging. Attend this session to learn how to write effective
summative assessments. Bring ideas, see examples of good and poor
assessments and develop a performance/summative assessment you can
use in your classroom with your own designed scoring tool. Repeated
from 2008.
Title: How to Develop, Analyze, and Score Common
Assessments
Topics: Curriculum; Instruction; Assessment

Location: Southwest Center
Audience: All Educators
Facilitator: Renee Goostree/Webb City Teachers

Description: As more and more districts are using common
assessments to move their students toward proficiency, there is

information that is gleaned from these assessments. The presenters
will give participants suggestions for effective analysis of
student work, particularly as it relates to common assessments.
They will help participants to get teachers to share ideas and
templates to rate assessment items and provide strategies for
developing effective common assessments in their districts.
Repeated from 2008.
