Upcoming REMS Workshops

Workshop sessions will continue to be scheduled as we receive confirmation of dates.  In all of our workshops we will be addressing the “train the trainer” issues to assist districts in sustaining this project.  All registration will be through the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence.

Please indicate name, school district and date/location of the workshop.  Please register as early as possible to assist us in determining need/location for additional sessions. 

Psychological First Aid           May 9, 2008               SCEE  Webb City
                                              8:00-3:30
This workshop is for district level and pilot school mental health teams (Annex G).
School Counselors would be members of this team. Each district/pilot school should register two for this training.  This is the only session of this training scheduled as we will  utilize these participants to share information and train in each district.

Jenny Wiley, Dept of Mental Health, will present the  session on intervention and recovery strategies for mental health teams.

Community Emergency Response Team training is for district level and pilot school Search and Rescue & Haz-Mat teams. (Annex D and H)  Teams should consist of a minimum of three-five designated participants.  Each district/pilot school should register at least one team for this session.  Additional sessions will be offered later in summer and throughout the grant period.

Participants should wear long pants and closed toe shoes as this is a hands-on workshop including training in medical operations, fire safety, light search and rescue and includes a disaster simulation.  CERT bags containing personal safety equipment and supplies will be distributed to workshop participants for their district/school. 

Security Team Training        June 4, 2008               SCEE Webb City

Security Team Training is for the district level and pilot school Security Teams.  (Annex E)  The training will provide an overview of operations, team responsibilities, and other security procedures. An active shooter presentation will be included in this workshop. 

Family Reunification             June 4, 2008               SCEE Webb City

This training is for staff members designated as members of the pilot school Family Reunification Team.  (Annex K)  The training will provide an overview of the components of the school reunification plan.  The workshop will address the roles of Security, Mental Health and Red Cross at Reunification Sites. 

School Nurse                          June 18-19, 2008        Granny Schaffer's Convention Center
Emergency Care                     8:00-4:30                   North Rangeline, Joplin
This workshop is for school nurses.  (Annex F) Each school district should register two nurses for this training.   Utilizing the train the trainer model, this workshop will prepare the nurses to train the first aid teams in each school in the district.  This is the only session of this training offered.
Marjorie Cole, RN, MSN, State School Nurse Consultant will conduct this workshop. The role of school nurses in emergency planning: assessment and triage; trauma; shock; environmental emergencies as well as other medical emergencies are covered in this training.
