Description: Shawn Cochrum will clarify for participants what the
law specifies in terms of offering appropriate services to English
Language Learners (ELLs). Missouri State law and federal law
will be highlighted and specifically related to the No Child Left
Behind Initiative. Discussions will include caseload
expectations, evaluation expectations, student population trends,
and the role of DESE and NSIP reviews. In addition, Ms
Shackles with present strategies for ESL programs. Using the
proper teaching techniques can make content comprehensible and
accessible to ELL students. You will learn the basics of
second language acquisition including: common acronyms,
culture shock, the difference between BICS and CALPS. You
will also be introduced to strategies for facilitating content area
learning through the use of: scaffolding techniques,
comprehensible input, building background, vocabulary instruction
for various stages of language acquisition, and assessment
accommodations. NEW
The February 11th session entitled MO Law and Federal Law Related to TESOL and No Child Left Behind is sponsored by MSSU’s Project S.P.E.A.K. and will include strategies for mainstream teachers working with English Language Learners. Only about 1 hr. and 30 minutes will be devoted to Law.
